2016 VMMF WORKSHOP SERIES

We’ve got a great workshop series lined up this year, suitable for all skill levels and all ages! VMMF workshops have limited seating, so please register in advance. But don’t delay! Workshops that do not have the minimum number of participants registered before June 6th will be cancelled.

Please note that workshop registration fees do not include your admission to the fair (get advance tickets online here). All tools and materials required for the workshop will be provided by the instructor -you don’t need to bring anything except your creativity and enthusiasm!

Maximizing Minecraft
$15+GST; Ages 7-16

Maximizing-MinecraftSOLD OUT Connect with your kids through Minecraft! Want to harness your kids love of Minecraft and turn it into a learning tool? In this parent and child session you and your child will work together to connect over learning. Parents, we’ll show you how to expand Minecraft’s potential by adding mods, including how to add python programming. With this you can use Minecraft to teach math and geometry! Kids, we’ll show you how to add 3D clipart and share your designs with your friends!

N.B.: This is aimed at adult-and-child pairs. Children under 14 need to attend with a adult.

Arm Knitting

Arm-KnittingHave you always wanted to have that chunky blanket you see in the magazines or on Pinterest? Dani from ‘leo & bea‘ will teach you how you can achieve just that. Come join her for a fun workshop! Material to make a small blanket are included in the fee. You’ll love the results and have fun in the process. Bring a friend and learn together. You’ll be happy you did!

Visible Mending
$40+GST; Ages 16-ADULT

Repair-your-clothingDon’t throw it out – fix it! In this workshop students will learn how to darn sweaters, sew buttons, and patch jeans to extend the life of your clothing. Hand sewing techniques will be used to expertly and lovingly repair your favourite pieces of clothing. Supplies will be available (needles, thread, buttons, Velcro, patches) but students are also encouraged to bring their own. No experience necessary. The visible repair movement has been gaining momentum as an active way to counter the consumption and throw away culture that we’ve found ourselves in.

Introduction to Code with HTML
$15+GST; Ages 10-12

Code-with-HTMLJoin Kids Code Jeunesse for a fun hands-on workshop on coding with HTML for children between ages 10 and 12. You’ll learn how the Internet works, what debugging is, and why coding is important. You’ll start with a basic webpage, and by exploring and experimenting, you’ll learn how to use HTML to add your own headings, paragraphs, images, links, and videos. You’ll even have a chance to style your webpage by changing the colour, font, and background using CSS. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have designed and built your very own webpage that you can share with others!

Rug Hooking
$20+GST; Ages 13-ADULT

Rug-HookingLearn the fundamentals of rug hooking in the Atlantic North American tradition, a highly-sustainable textile art. Rug hooking involves using a hook to pull strips of woven wool fabric through an open-weave linen backing, thus creating a series of loops. You’ll create a small mat for use as a coaster or mug rug, and learn how to neatly finish the rug by using a hem or running stitch. You’ll receive a small square of linen rug foundation and enough wool strips to hook the mat, with limited choice of colours and pattern.

Growing With Lego
$15+GST; Ages 3-ADULT

Growing With Lego #2

Build a small “pot” from Lego, line it with a special, organic, soil-free growing medium and “plant” a custom blend of mildly spicy microgreen seeds (kale, broccoli, mustard, cress, radishes etc). To help the seeds germinate more quickly we’ll put them in a sealable bag, effectively creating a mini-greenhouse.  Take your Lego planter home and harvest your crop in 7-10 days. Microgreens offer excellent nutrition and are delicious in omelettes, sandwiches and salads.

Miniature Paper Modelling
$25+GST; Ages 16-ADULT

Paper-ModellingMake a miniature paper model of a car. It’s a fun and relaxing exercise to make the models and a pleasure to possess them. Emphasis will be on teaching the techniques and finer aspects of Paper modelling. Once the techniques of Paper craft are mastered, you’l be able to make many more models of your choice.

Weave Yourself
$35+GST; Ages 13-ADULT

Weave-YourselfIn freestyle weaving, there are no mistakes! Dawn will have her rigid heddle looms all set up and ready for you to weave yourself a set of completely original one-of-a-kind handwoven mug mats, that could never have been made by a machine. All materials and supplies will be provided. If you have some yarn from your own stash that you would like to use, feel free to bring it along -even short left over bits can be used in freestyle weaving. This is a great way to give weaving a try! Even if you have never done any weaving before, you will be able to make something interesting and you will have a lot of fun.

Shifting Colours of Natural Dyes with Homemade Mordants and Modifiers
$55+GST; Ages 16-ADULT

Natural-DyesIn this workshop you will be using homemade copper and iron mordants to shift the colours of naturally dyed wool. Easily become an alchemist by learning to make your own mordants at home from scrap metals- and see how using them as modifiers for naturally dyed wool is a great way to shift colour. We will also try out some other modifiers that are easily found around the home or accessible at a grocery store. You will be using both wildcrafted natural dyes and exotic dyes on wool yarn. You will go home with mini skeins of the colours achieved during the workshop!
